Safeguarding Reviews & Audits
Understanding the Reality of Safeguarding in Your School

.png)
Safeguarding is not policy document. It is a living culture shaped by leadership, staff confidence, student experiences, and the decisions made when concerns arise.

Many schools discover this only when something goes wrong. An allegation. A failed accreditation. An inspection or case review that surfaces what an internal child protection inquiry missed. By that point, the gaps that existed long before are suddenly very visible.

Our independent safeguarding reviews help schools understand the reality of their safeguarding before it is put to the test. We examine not only what your policies say but how safeguarding is understood, experienced, and acted upon by the people who depend upon it.

Whether you are preparing for accreditation, seeking assurance for your Board, responding to a concern, or simply wanting an honest picture of current practice, we provide clear, evidence-based findings and practical recommendations your school can act on.
Don't wait for an allegation to find out if your safeguarding is working

We Don't Just Review Policies.
We Review People's Experience of Safeguarding.
Most safeguarding audits focus on documentation and procedural compliance. Every Encompass review goes further - because the true test of safeguarding is not whether policies exist, but whether they translate into a culture where concerns are raised, heard, and acted upon.

In every review, we examine whether:
-
The DSL and Safeguarding / Child Protection team have the training, systems, policies, and structures and support they need to do their job effectively.
-
The Senior Leadership team understands their responsibilities and provide the support the Safeguarding team requires.
-
The right foundations are in place for the wider community to raise concerns with confidence, and trust that they will be appropriately acted upon.
In the Comprehensive Safeguarding Review, we also explore the school community's experience of Safeguarding and Child Protection.
-
The depth of confidence staff feel around identifying and raising concerns and if there are any areas that have become a 'blind spot'.
-
Whether students of all ages and needs feel safe, listened to, know who to turn to, and trust the adults around them.
-
Whether parents understand and have confidence in the school's safeguarding arrangements.
-
Where cultural barriers, hidden risks, or unrecognised strengths exist across the school community.
This is where the most significant findings often emerge - not from documents, but from the people safeguarding is there to protect.

A Safeguarding review is key to understanding how effectively Safeguarding is part of the living culture of your school

Safeguarding Audit or Safeguarding Review - What's the Difference?
Most schools come to us asking for a safeguarding audit. It is the term most people know, and it is what many schools believe they need. However, what they are looking for is exactly what we provide because a safeguarding review goes significantly further than a traditional audit.

A typical safeguarding audit focuses on compliance. It checks whether policies exist, whether training records are complete, and whether statutory requirements have been met.
A safeguarding review asks a harder question: is safeguarding actually working? It examines not just what your policies say, but whether they are understood, embedded, and effective across your school community, looking at culture, leadership, decision-making, staff confidence, and the experience of the people safeguarding is there to protect.

For most schools, that deeper understanding is what they actually need, whether they are preparing for accreditation, seeking Board assurance, or simply wanting to know their safeguarding is as strong as it should be.

If you arrived here searching for a safeguarding audit, you are in the right place.

"Sian walked around the school with us for less than an hour and pointed out the 10+ things that we had never noticed or considered. It was incredibly helpful for our future planning and it worked well just to have the verbal feedback we could action quickly.
Kate, Director EWIS, Cambodia

Desktop or Comprehensive Review?
Option 1 - Desktop Safeguarding Policy & Systems Review
Independent Assurance of Your Safeguarding Foundations
The Desktop Safeguarding Policy and Systems Review provides a structured, independent assessment of your school's safeguarding policies, systems, and organisational arrangements, giving leadership and governance a clear, evidence-based picture of where your school stands.
It is designed for schools that want to understand what is working, what requires attention, and where development should be prioritised, whether that is before accreditation, following a leadership change, in response to a concern, or as part of a planned cycle of safeguarding improvement.
This review is also well-suited to schools with a new DSL or Head, those preparing for BSO inspection or CIS/WASC/NEASC accreditation, or those who have not previously commissioned an independent safeguarding review.
Through detailed analysis of your policies and documentation, and structured professional discussions with your DSL, senior leaders, and designated safeguarding governor, we identify strengths, gaps, and priorities and provide a clear roadmap for development.

-
Clear, prioritised recommendations with practical guidance for your improvement planning.
-

Option 2 - Comprehensive Safeguarding Review
The Highest Level of Independent Safeguarding Assurance
The Comprehensive Safeguarding Review is our most detailed evaluation of safeguarding culture, practice, and effectiveness across your school community. It goes beyond what any document review can tell you, examining not just whether the right systems exist, but whether safeguarding is genuinely working for the people who depend upon it.

This review is particularly valuable for schools seeking Board-level assurance, preparing for accreditation, navigating leadership or organisational change, or wanting a complete and honest picture of safeguarding strengths and vulnerabilities before they are tested by a complex case or external inspection.

Being present in your school allows us to gather evidence that no remote process can replicate: student voice, staff culture, site observations, and the lived experience of your safeguarding team.
Our Comprehensive Review Examines Safeguarding Through Five Key Lenses:

Leadership and Governance
Culture, leadership accountability, Board oversight and strategic safeguarding direction.

People and Practice
Staff knowledge, confidence, safeguarding culture and day-to-day implementation.
Systems and Compliance
Policies, procedures, safer recruitment, record keeping and case management.
Stakeholder Experience
How students, parents and staff experience safeguarding across the school community.
Risk and Context
Online safety, emerging risks, boarding provision and context-specific safeguarding challenges.
What You Receive
-
A comprehensive narrative report with findings across all domains and commendations where practice is strong.
-
An executive summary written for Governors and Boards.
-
Red, Amber, Green (RAG) rated findings and recommendations so priorities are immediately clear.
-
A strategic development roadmap your DSL and leadership team can act on.
-
A three-month review meeting to assess progress against recommendations and address emerging questions.
-
A six-month review meeting to evaluate implementation and identify next steps.
The three and six month meetings are not an add-on. They are built into every Comprehensive Review because independent assurance without follow-through accountability has limited value. We want to know that the work we identify together is actually happening.
Pricing is tailored to school size, complexity, and specific provision, including boarding and residential programmes.

A Simple Way to Think About It

The Desktop Safeguarding Policies and Systems Review asks:
"Do we have the right safeguarding systems and processes in place and are they fit for purpose?"

The Comprehensive Safeguarding Review asks:
"How effectively is safeguarding actually working across our school community?"
The Comprehensive Safeguarding Review examines not only policies and systems, but also culture, leadership, lived experience, organisational capacity and how safeguarding functions in practice.

Every School Is Different. Let's Talk
We will always be honest about what your school actually needs. Some schools are well served by a Desktop Review. Others require the deeper insight and assurance that only an on-site Comprehensive Review can provide.
A short conversation is usually all it takes to establish which approach is right for your context, your priorities, and your budget.
