Safe Touch and Positive Handling
Essential guidance for school staff on professional, safe, and appropriate physical contact with students
This training is specifically designed for international school staff who frequently engage in physical interaction​ with students as part of their role.

There are two different options for the course. It is recommended that staff are grouped by their specific area of teaching, as the course is tailored with appropriate content:
1. Safe Touch and Positive Handling- Group 1: Specialist Staff (PE, Music, Drama)
or
2. Safe Touch and Positive Handling- Group 2: Classroom and Early Years Staff

This training provides essential guidance for school staff on professional, safe, and appropriate physical contact with students. It ensures staff understand their duty of care, when and how physical contact is appropriate, and how to handle situations where intervention is necessary. The session also covers positive handling strategies, de-escalation techniques, and the legal and ethical considerations surrounding physical contact in schools.

What You Need to know
Course Delivery:

Individuals follow the course at their own pace; 1.5hr of videos split into small chunks, along with a test and reflective task

Course Topics :
Roles & Responsibilities – Understanding professional boundaries & duty of care. Safe Touch & Touch Avoidance – Recognising when touch is necessary and appropriate. Physical Intervention & Reasonable Force – When and how to intervene safely. Prevention Strategies & De-escalation – Managing situations before physical handling is needed. Positive Handling Guidelines – Techniques to minimise risk to students and staff. Case Studies & Practical Scenarios – Real-life examples for different staff roles.
Learning Outcomes :
By the end of this training, participants will: -Understand their duty of care in relation to physical contact and safeguarding. -Recognise what constitutes ‘safe touch’ and when physical contact is appropriate. -Apply de-escalation techniques to manage challenging behaviour before intervention is needed. -Know when and how to use reasonable force in very rare circumstance and only when absolutely unavoidable. -Understand school policies on physical contact and know how to report concerns appropriately. -Engage with real-life case studies relevant to their specific roles, helping them apply learning in a practical context.
